There are various scams criminals use to harm users or gain access to their TikTok accounts. One method is particularly deceptive because it deliberately takes advantage of people’s trust and willingness to help others.
You receive a message from someone in your friends or followers list. The person tells you that they have bought a new smartphone and can no longer log in to their TikTok account.
They claim that, for security reasons, they need to name three friends who will receive a verification code from TikTok — and that you are one of those friends.
Next, they ask for your email address or phone number so that TikTok can send you the required code.
Shortly afterwards, you actually receive a verification code from TikTok.
And this is where the trap closes.
The code was not sent to help your friend. Your email address or phone number has been used to initiate a login or account-recovery process connected to your account.
The scammer does not have the information needed to complete that process, which is why TikTok sends the verification code directly to you.
If you give that code to the person who contacted you, you are handing over a security credential that was intended for you — not for them. The scammer can then use it to continue the login or recovery process and gain access to your account.
Never share a TikTok verification code with another person.
This applies even when the message appears to come from someone you know and regularly communicate with.
The account contacting you may already have been compromised. Once criminals gain control of an account, they can use the trusted identity behind it to contact friends and followers and attempt to take over additional accounts.
If someone you know asks you for a verification code, contact that person through another communication channel you already know — for example, by phone or through another messaging service — and ask whether they actually sent the message.
You can also warn mutual friends. Creating and sharing a short post or video about the attempted scam can help protect other members of the community from falling into the same trap.
If you confirm that the account has been compromised, report the affected profile to TikTok and block it until the legitimate owner has regained control.
Remember: A verification code sent to you is for you. Never forward it to anyone else.
